Question 129526: when a smaller number is subtracted from a larger number, the difference is 34. if the larger number is 30 less than 3 times the smaller number, what are the two numbers?

Answer by ptaylor(2198)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Let x=smaller number
Then x+34=larger number
Now we are told that:
(x+34)+30=3x or
x+34+30=3x subtract x from both sides
x-x+64=3x-x collect like terms
64=2x divide both sides by 2
x=32 smaller number
x+34=32+34=66 larger number

CK
66-32=34
34=34
and
66+30=3*32
96=96
Hope this helps---ptaylor
