Question 12940: how do you factor this?:

Answer by longjonsilver(2297)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
you have to try a few approaches.

The first would be to look at the first 2 terms and then at the last 2 terms:

3x(y-4) - 7(y+4)

Now, you can do nothing more with this, however, i think you have written a sign wrong somewhere in your question, as the 2 brackets, i guess, should be the same, something like 3x(y-4) - 7(y-4).

Check your question.

Anyway, you would then look at both expressions and see the common one, here the (y-4), and so we could factor that out, as (y-4)(3x-7).
