.

Put aside 9 dimes, for a moment.

Then you have a collection of equal number of dimes and nickels,
which is worth 120 - 90 = 30 cents.

At this point, your mind (or your inner voice) tells you
that updated collection consists of 2 dimes and 2 nickels.

Hence, the original collection had 11 dimes and 2 nickels.

Solved mentally, because it is as simple as 1 + 2 = 3.

Answer by math_tutor2020(3817)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!

n = number of nickels
n+9 = number of dimes

5n = value of the nickels (cents)
10(n+9) = 10n+90 = value of the dimes (cents)

(5n)+(10n+90) = 15n+90 = total value (cents)

$1.20 = 120 cents

15n+90 = 120
15n = 120-90
15n = 30
n = 30/15
n = 2 coins are nickels.
n+9 = 2+9 = 11 coins are dimes.

Check:
2 nickels = 2*5 = 10 cents
11 dimes = 11*10 = 110 cents
10 cents + 110 cents = 120 cents = $1.20
The answer is confirmed.
