Let x be the unknown number.


Write equation as you read the problem


    x*(-15) - 25 = x*9 + 23.


Simplify it step by step 


    -15x - 25 = 9x + 23


Collect constant terms at the left side,

collect the terms with "x" at the right side.


By moving the terms from one side of the equation to another side do not forget change the sign.


    -23 - 25 = 9x + 15x


Combine like terms and find x


       -48   = 24x

         x   =  = -2.    ANSWER
