x and x+2 are the numbers
9(x+2)-7x=144
2x+18=144
2x=126
x=63
x+2=65
those are the numbers, 63 and 65
585-441=144

I have a habit of using x-1 and x+1 (instead of x and x+2) for solving problems involving consecutive odd numbers; it often makes the algebra easier. So
ANSWER: The two numbers are 63 and 65.
CHECK:
9(65)-7(63) = 585-441 = 144
NOTE: Using x-1 and x+1 for the two numbers in this problem probably made the algebra harder.... lol
