Let x be his age 12 years ago; then 8x will be his age 30 years from now.

The difference between 8x and x is 7x; the difference between 12 years ago and 30 years from now is 42 years.

So 7x = 42; x = 6.

His age 12 years ago was x = 6; so his current age is 18.
