I will solve #1 only.

Let x be the height, in feet.

Then the base is 3x ft, according to the condition.

The area is

     area =  = 24 square feet,   or

     3x^2 = 2*24 = 48,

      x^2        = 48/3 = 16

      x =  = 4.

ANSWER. The height is 4 ft; the base is 3*4 = 12 ft.
