Answer by checkley71(8403) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
X+Y=68 OR X=68-Y
X-Y=16
NOW SUBSTITUTE (68-Y) FOR X IN THE OTHER EQUATION & SOLVE FOR Y.
(68-Y)-Y=16
68-Y-Y=16
-2Y=16-68
-2Y=-52
Y=-52/-2
Y=26 ANSWER.
X+26=68
X=68-26
X=42 ANSWER.
PROOF
42-26=16
16=16
