Question 1109529: The number of people who attended an art conference for five days was 42,27,35,39,and 96.Describe the effect of the outliner on the mean and median.

The outlier changes the median much less than the mean, because it counts as 1, not as a larger number.
The mean of all is 47.8 (sum divided by 5)
The median of all is 39 (the middle number of the ordered group)
Remove the 96
The mean is now 143/4=35.75, a drop of about one-quarter
The median is 37 (half way between 35 and 39), a drop of about 5%.
