We must convert to hours since midnight:

Add 12:00 to the P.M. time to get the hours since midnight
and subtract the A.M. time, which is already the hours since
midnight:

  2:15
+12:00
------
 14:15
- 4:45
------

Since we can't subtract 45 from 15, we add 60 minutes to the 15
and subtract 1 hour from the 14

  2:15
+12:00
------
 14:15 = 13:75
- 4:45  - 4:45
------  ------
          9:30

9 hours and 30 minutes
