L + K = 38      (1)

K = L+4         (2)


=======>  substitute it in eq(1).  You will get

L + (L+4) = 38,

2L + 4 = 38,

2L = 38-4 = 34  ====>  L =  = 17.


Answer.  Luke biked 17 miles, Kerry 17+4 = 21.


Check.  17 + 21 = 38.
