Question 1055111: One number is 3 more than another. The difference between their squares is 63. What are the numbers?
Answer by addingup(3677)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = y+3
x^2-y^2 = 63 substitute for x:
(y+3)^2-y^2 = 63
6y+9 = 63
6y = 54
y = 9
and
x = 9+3 = 12
-------------------
check:
One number is 3 more than another: 9+3=12 Correct
The difference between their squares is 63:
12^2-9^2 = 63; 144-81 = 63 Correct again
