Question 1055031: The sum of two numbers is 316. One number is 44 less than three times the other nimber. Find the numbers.
Answer by addingup(3677) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x+y = 316 subtract x from both sides
y = 316-x
----------------
x = 3y-44 substitute for y:
x = 3(316-x)-44
x = 948-3x-44
4x = 904
x = 226 And we said y is 316-x:
y = 316-226 = 90---------------------
Check:
226 = (3*90)-44 correct (use your calculator to verify the equality)
and
226+90 = 316 Also correct
