I have tried this way: x 1/3 -4 =8 but i still got the wrong answer

 = 12

x = 3*12.

(1/3)x-4=8 is one interpretation of what you wrote.
(1/3)x=12, adding 4 to each side
x=36, multiplying by 3.

(1/3x) is another interpretation of what you wrote.
(1/3x)=12, as before.
36x=1, cross-multiplying
x=(1/36), dividing by 3.
