I have tried this question many differen ways and its starting to bother me becuse i dont understand how to get the answer.. please help me.

I think I understand your explanation.
Your number is XY where
and
Sum of the squares equals 26.
Substitute for X as function of Y.
FOIL method.
Additive inverse of 26.

Divide by 2.
Factor the equation.
Y=1 or Y=-5 are the two solutions.
A negative digit would not make sense here, so we use Y=1.
Your first equation.
Plug in the value for Y.

Your number is XY=51.
