Fransine got 34 multiple choice question correct and received 14 points for her essay. Cheryl got 30 multiple choice questions correct and received 22 points for her essay. How many points was each multilple choice question worth?

Let us call the number of points awarded for each correct answer, x. Then we can write
34x + 14 = 30x + 22
Now subtract 14 and subtract 30x and get
34x = 30x + 8
4x = 8
x = 2
