Question 1033143: One number is 10 less than 4 times another number. Their sum is 20. What are the two numbers?

Call the numbers x and y. Then we write
x = 4y - 10 and
x + y = 20
Now substitute the first into the second...we get
4y-10 + y = 20
5y - 10 = 20
5y = 30
y = 6
and then
x = 14
