The sum of two numbers is 64
x + y = 64
Their difference is 20
x - y = 20
x = 20 + y
Substitute 20 + y for x in
first equation:
x + y = 64
(20 + y) + y = 64
20 + y + y = 64
Collect like terms:
y + y = 64 - 20
2y = 44
y = 22
Substitute y = 22 into:
x + y = 64
x + 22 = 64
x = 64 - 22
x = 42
Two numbers are:
42 and 22
