Call the smaller one, x. Then the larger one is x+8. Then we write
(1/2)(x+8) + (1/4)x = 22
Now solve...multiply everything by 4 to clear fractions...
2(x+8) + x = 88
2x + 16 + x = 88
3x + 16 = 88
3x = 72
x = 24
x+8 = 32
