Question 1030456: Hi, I have a question
The product of 2 numbers is 96. One number is 4 more than the other. Find the two numbers.
We have been told to use quadratic equations to solve this but I am not sure how to go about it.
I have done n(n+4) = 96
But I don't know what else to do....l
Thanks

Hi there,
You are almost there, well done!
n(n + 4) = 96
Multiply out and form a quadratic.
n^2 + 4n = 96
n^2 + 4n - 96 = 0
Factorise:
(n - 8)(n + 12) = 0
n - 8 = 0
n = 8
n + 12 = 0
n = -12
You have two answers:
Either x = 8
or
x = -12
Either will work:-
If we take x = 8
Other number is 4 more
so equals 12
8 x 12 = 96
Ok
If we take x = -12
Other number is 4 more
so equals -8
-8 x -12 = 96
The choice is yours.
Hope this helps :-)

Multiply,
Two solutions:
So then,
-12 and -8
and
then,
n+4=12}
8 and 12
