Call the numbers of fiction and non-fiction books, x and y, respectfully.
Thus you can write
x + y = 2000
and
y = 3x
Now to solve, substitute the second equation into the first and get
x + 3x = 2000
4x = 2000
x = 500 fiction books and then
y = 3x = 1500 non-fiction books
