His average speed in the morning was 23 miles per hour.
His average speed in the afternoon was 13 miles per hour.
How many hours did he ride in the morning, and how many hours he ride in the afternoon?
:
let t = time riding at 23 mph in the morning
total time given as 5 hrs, therefore
(5-t) = time riding at 13 mph in the afternoon

Write a distance equation, dist = speed * time
morning dist + afternoon dist = 100 mi
23t + 13(5-t) = 100
23t + 65 - 13t = 100
23t - 13t = 100 - 65
10t = 35
t = 35/10
t = 3.5 hrs at 23 mph in the morning
then
5 - 3.5 = 1.5 hrs at 13 mph in the afternoon
