Call the larger and the smaller, x and y. Then we have
x + y = 11 (or x = 11 - y)
and
3x - 2y = 8
Now substitute and get
3(11-y) - 2y = 8
33 - 3y - 2y = 8
-5y + 33 = 8
-5y = -25
y = 5
x = 6
