The average of 9 numbers is 43.
When one of the numbers is subtracted.
The new mean is 47. What is the number?
:
Find total of the 9 original numbers; 9 * 43 = 387
:
= 47
multiply both sides by 8
387 - n = 8(47)
-n = 376 - 387
-n = -11
n = 11 is the subtracted number
