Divide 150 into three parts such that the second number is five-sixths the first and the third number is four fifths the second.
:
Let a, b, c = the three parts, write an equation for each statement
:
Divide 150 into three parts
a + b + c = 150
such that the second number is five-sixths the first
b = a
or multiply both sides by 6/5
a = b
and the third number is four fifths the second.
c = b
:
Replace a and c in the first equation
b + b + b = 150
multiply equation by 5, cancel the denominators
6b + 5b + 4b = 5(150)
15b = 750
b = 750/15
b = 50 is the 2nd number
then
a = *50
a = 60
and
c = *50
c = 40
:
:
They add up to 150.
