So the large number and the smaller number are both relative to the middle number. Let's find the middle number, let's call it x. The large number will be l and the small number s:
2x= l
x-5= s

s+x+l= 43 Substitute in this equation with above values
x-5+x+2x= 43 Add 5 on both sides:
x+x+2x= 48
4x= 48
x= 12 This is the middle number. The small number is:
x-5= s
12-5= 7 is the small number. And the large number:
2x=l
2(12)= l
l= 24 This is your big number
