Word problems on mixtures for dry substances like soil and sand

Problem 1

Two cubic meters of soil containing  35%  sand were mixed with six cubic meters of soil containing  15%  sand.
What is the sand content of the mixture?

Solution

Percentage of sand in this problem is based on volumetric content of sand in the soil.

There are  2 * 0.35 = 0.7 m%5E3  of sand in  2 m%5E3  of soil containing  35%  sand.
There are  6 * 0.15 = 0.9 m%5E3  of sand in  6 m%5E3  of soil containing  15%  sand.

So we have  8 m%5E3  of soil containing  1.6 m%5E3  of sand.

Thus volumetric content of sand in the mixture is  1.6%2F8 * 100 = 20%.

Answer.  Volumetric content of sand in the mixture is  20%.
