Question 26068: I don't think I set this problem up correctly, thought I would try...
Antifreeze A is 15% alcohol. Antifreeze B is 10% alcohol. How many liters of each should be mixed in order to get 20 liters of a mixture that is 18% alcohol?
I set it up like this:
.15X + .10X(20-X)= 20(.18)
I get confused on what to put in the parenthesis like the (20-X)

Question 26124: I tried to do this problem by myself also, but I am getting a negative number. I am setting them up wrong, but not sure how to do it the right way.
Marvelous Marilyn wants to combine a 30% alcohol solution with a 50% alcohol solution to get 500 mg of an 80% alcohol solution. Please help her accomplish this task.
I set it up like this:
.30X + .50(500-X) = .80(500)
I am getting a negative number, so I know I did it wrong.

Question 26123: I tried this by myself, but it didn't work out. Here is the question and the way I set it up.
If Jolly Janet has 0.5% saline to mix with 7.5% saline, how much of each is needed to get 200L of 1.0% saline?
I set it up like this:
.005X + .075(200-X)=.001(200)
I know this is wrong, but could you tell me the correct way to set it up?

I think it is 12.2(100)-.08x = .12(100=x), but i can't get it to work out into an answer I have to chose from.

Question 28536: I am having the worst time with mixture word problems. I am in College Algebra and this is my question.
---A chemist needs 170 milliliters of a 21% solution but has only 3% and 37% solutions available. Find how many milliliters of each that should be mixed to get the desired solution.
I used x= the 3% solution and y= the 37% solution.
