A chemistry teacher needs to mix a 20% salt solution with a 90% salt solution to make 25 qt of a 48% salt solution. How many quarts of each solution should the teacher mix to get the desired result?

Let amount of 20% solution to be mixed, be T
Then amount of 90% solution to be mixed = 25 - T
We then get: .2T + .9(25 - T) = .48(25)
.2T + 22.5 - .9T = 12
.2T - .9T = 12 - 22.5
- .7T = - 10.5
T, or amount of 20% solution to be mixed = , or quarts
Amount of 90% solution to be mixed = 25 - 15, or quarts
