A chemist has x grams of an alloy that is 20% silver and 10% gold, and y grams of an alloy that is 25% silver and 30% gold. Express the number of grams of gold in the two alloys in terms of x and y.
10% of the x grams of the alloy is gold. 30% of the y grams of it is gold.

10% of x is gold and 30% of y is gold.

10%x + 30%y is gold.

Change the percents to decimals:

0.10x + 0.30y is gold.
