Question 918166: how many gallons of gasoline that is 8% ethanol must be added to 2000 gallons of gasoline that is 5% ethanol to get a mixture that is 6% ethanol?
Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
We have 2000 gal of 5% gas
We want to add some 8% gas to make 6% gas
0.08*x+0.05*2000=0.06(2000+x)
0.08*x+100=120+0.06x
0.08x-0.06x=120-100
0.02x=20
x=1000 gal at 8% (80) is added to 2000 gal at 5%(100) to make 6% of 3000 gal(180)
check
0.08*1000+0.05*2000=0.06(2000+1000)
80+100=0.06(3000)
180=180
ok
