he has liquid fertilizer solutions that are 10% and 50% nitrogen. how many gallons of each of each of these solutions should he mix to obtain 20 gallons of a solution that is 35% nitrogen?
----
Equation:
nitro + nitro = nitro
----
0.10x + 0.50(20-x) = 0.35*20
----------
10x + 50*20 - 50x = 35*20
-40x = -15*20
----
x = (1/2)15 = 7.5 gallons (amt. of 10% solution needed)
20-x = 12.5 gallons (amt. of 50% solution needed)
