Question 906634: A chemist has two solutions, one is 30% alcohol and the other 90% alcohol. How much of each solution should be mixed together to make 400liters of solution that is 54% alcohol?
a+b=400 .3*a+.9*b=.54*400 a=400*b .3*(400-b)+.9*b=.54 .3-.3+.9*b=.9

Answer by richwmiller(17219)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a+b=400,
0.3*a+0.9*b=0.54*400
a=400-b
0.3*(400-b)+0.9*b=216
120-0.3b+0.9*b=216
0.6*b=96
b=160
a=400-b
a=240 liter at 30%
b=160 liter at 90%
check
0.3*240+0.9*160=0.54*400
72+144=216
216=216
ok
