Question 904823: A modern jet plane can go 400 mph more than twice as fast as a diesel powered train. IF the train can run 165 mi. in the same time that the plane can fly 1210mi., find the rate of each?

Times are equal
Apply conditions and equate
diesel powered train speed = x
A modern jet plane can go 400 mph more than twice as fast as a diesel powered train.
speed = 2x+400
d/r train = d/r plane
165/x = 1210/(2x+400)
165(2x+400)=1210x
330x+66000=1210x
880x=66000
/880
x= 75 mph speed of train
speed of plane = (2x+4)
2*75+400
=150+400
550 mph
IF the train can run 165 mi. in the same time that the plane can fly 1210mi., find the rate of each?
