Question 902384: Please help me solve this word problem:
We need a mixture of gold raisins that sell for $4.50 per pound and dark raisins that sell for $2.30
per pound. How many pounds of each type of raisin should be used if 50.6 pounds of the mix is
to sell for $3.50 per pound?
I'm having trouble figuring out the equation.

Answer by richwmiller(17219)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a+b=50.6,
0.045*a+0.023*b=0.035*50.6
a=50.6-b
0.045*(50.6-b)+0.023*b=1.771
2.277-0.045b+0.023*b=1.771
-0.022*b=-0.506
b=23.0
a=50.6-b
a=27.6 lb at $4.50 b=23.0 lb at $2.30
check
0.045*27.6+0.023*23.0=0.035*50.6
1.242+0.529=1.771
1.771=1.771
ok
