Question 890772: a coffee retailer has two grades of decaffeinated coffee beans, one wholesales at $4.00 a pound and the other for 6.50 a pound. she wishes to blend the beans to form a 150 pound mixture that sells wholesale for 4.75 a pound. how many pounds of each grade of bean should she use in the mixture?

Let x=amount of the $6.50 grade
Then 150-x=amount of $4.00 grade
Now we know that the cost of the beans before the mixture takes place has to equal the cost of the beans after the mixture takes place, soooo:
$6.50x +$4.00(150-x)=150*$4.75
$6.50x-$4.00x+$600=$712.50
$2.50x=$112.50
x=45 lb----amount of $6.50 grade
150-45=105 lb---amount of $4.00 grade

$292.50+$420=$712.50
$712.50=$712.50
