Let x=amount of $3.40 nuts that should be used
Cost of $3.40 nuts=$3.40x
Cost of $2.00 nuts=$2.00(3)
Cost of final mixture=$2.98(3+x)
Now we know that the cost of the nuts before the mixture ($3.40x+$2.00(3)) must equal the cost of the nuts in the final mixture($2.98(3+x)) so our equation to solve is:
$3.40x+$2.00(3)=$2.98(3+x) get rid of parens
$3.40x+$6.00=$8.94+$2.98x subtract $6.00 and also $2.98x from both sides
$3.40x+6.00-$6.00-$2.98x=$8.94-$6.00+$2.98x-$2.98x collect like terms
0.42x=$2.94 divide both sides by 0.42
x=7 lb------amount of $3.40 nuts that must be added

$3.40(7)+$2.00(3)=$2.98(10)
$23.80+$6.00=$29.80
$29.80=$29.80
