Question 85988: A researcher orders a broth of 7.5% glucose for her lab. However, she needs a stronger broth, one that is 24.9% glucose. Fortunately, she has 26.9 liters of 36.1% glucose broth in the stock room. How much 24.9% glucose broth can she make?
Answer by Earlsdon(6294)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = the number of liters of 7.5% glucose broth that must be added to the 26.9 liters of 36.1% glucose broth to obtain (26.9+x) liters of 24.9% glucose broth. You can set up the following equation to find x. First, change the percentages to their decimal equivalents.
7.5% = 0.075
36.1% = 0.361
24.9% = 0.249
Simplify and solve for x.
Subtract 0.075x from both sides.
Subtract 6.6981 from both sides.
Divide both sides by 0.174
Now add this to the 26.9 liters to get the total amount of 24.9% glucose broth.
liters.
The researcher can make 44.215 liters of 24.9% glucose broth.
