To make a flour mixture, a miller combined soybeans that cost $8.50 per bushel with wheat that cost $4.50 per bushel. How many bushels of each were used to make a mixture of 800 bushels costing $5.50 per bushel?

Let x = amt of soybean meal
the final total is to be 800 bu, therefore:
(800-x) = amt of wheat flour required

The mixture equation
8.50x + 4.50(800-x) = 5.50(800)
8.5x + 3600 - 4.5x = 4400
8.5x - 4.5x = 4400 - 3600
4x = 800
x = 800/4
x = 200 bu of soy meal
then
800 - 200 = 600 bu of wheat flour
