Question 831036: A chemist has a solution that is 50 percent acid. By adding water the solution is reduced to one containing 40 percent acid. By adding 500cm^3 more water the solution then contains only 35 percent acid. Determine (A) How many cubic centimeters of the 50 percent acid solution the chemist had originally and (B) How many cubic centimeters of the 35 percent acid solution the chemist had finally.
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A chemist has a solution that is 50 percent acid. By adding water the solution is reduced to one containing 40 percent acid.
acid + acid = acid
0.50x + 0*w = 0.40(x+w)
-------------------------
By adding 500cm^3 more water the solution then contains only 35 percent acid.
0.40(x+w) + 0*500z = 0.35(x+w+500)

Comment:
Your post should contain the amount of 50% solution
so you could solve for "w". It does not so you
cannot solve for a numerical answer.
