Question 807613: I'm having a really hard time with this question and don't know where to begin. It was extra credit and I already turned it in without getting the answer.
"Melving delivered 13 envelopes to my house. Eight were checks and all for the same amount, five were bills all for the same amount as well. After opening all the envelopes I had made $240 dollars. Creat an amount for each bill and each check to make this true."
So....
Eight were checks all for the same amount
five were bills all for the same amount as well.
Total $240 dollars.
...?

Answer by DrBeeee(684)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
There is an infinite number of solutions!
Let c = value of each of the 8 checks
Let b = value of each of the 5 bills
Then we have
(1) 8c - 5b = 240 or
(2) 8c = 5b + 240 or
(3) c = (5/8)*b + 30
This is a straight line with c-intercept of 30 and a slope of 5/8.
Some solution points are (0,30), (8,35), (16,40) etc
The problem does not give you enough information to find the specific point on the line given by (3). However the question says to create values to make the statment true, and that we did!
Answer: any pair (b, (5/8)*b + 30).
