How much pure alcohol has to be added to 150 gallons of a 32% alcohol solution in order to bring the alcohol concentration up to 40%?
:
Let a = amt of pure alcohol required to accomplish this
:
.32(150) + a = .40(a+150)
48 + a = .4a + 60
a - .4a = 60 - 48
.6a = 12
a = 12/.6
a = 20 gallons of pure pure alcohol required
;
:
see if that checks out
48 + 20 = .4(170)
68 = 68, confirms our solution of 20 gal of pure alcohol
