Let x=number of lbs of $2.20 meat
Then 50-x=number of lbs of $4.20 meat
cost of $2.20 meat + cost of $4.20 meat must = cost of final mixture
So, our equation to solve is:
$2.20x+$4.20(50-x)=$3.00(50) get rid of parens
$2.20x+$210-$4.20x=$150 subtract $210 from both sides
$2.20x+$210-$210-$4.20x=$150-$210 collect like terms
-$2.00x=-$60.00 divide both sides by -$2.00
x=30 lb ----------------------------------number of lbs of $2.20 meat
50-x=50-30=20 lb----------------------------number of lbs of $4.20 meat
