A weed killer is to be diluted with water so that the weed killer is just
1% of the solution. How much water should be mixed with 5 cm³ of weed
killer?

Let the answer be x.

When we mix x cm³ of water with the 5 cm³ of weed killer, we will 
have a total of (x + 5) cm³ of liquid.

The 5 cm³ of weed killer is just 1%  of  the total (x + 5) cm³ of liquid.
    ¯                     ¯      ¯    ¯               ¯ 
    5                     =     .01 times          (x + 5) 

                        5 = .01(x + 5)
