John wants to mix a solution containing 10%acid with one containing 15% acid to obtain a 20-ounce solution containing 12% acid. How many ounces of the 10% solution should John use?
.
Let x = amount (ounces) of 10% acid
then
20-x = amount (ounces) of 15% acid
.
.10x + .15(20-x) = .12(20)
.10x + 3-.15x = 2.4
3-.05x = 2.4
-.05x = -0.6
x = (-0.6)/(-.05)
x = 12 ounces (of 10% solution)
