Answer by checkley71(8403)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3C+G=150
2C+4G=200 NOW MULTIPLY EQ #1 BY -4 & ADD THE 2 EQ.
-12C-4G=-600
-----------------------------
-10C=-400
C=-400/-10
C=40 OR $.40 FOR THE CANDY BAR.
3*40+G=150
120+G=150
G=150-120
G=30 OR $.30 FOR THE GUM.
PROOF
2*40+4*30=200
80+120=200
200=200

9. Sally bought three chocolate bars and a pack of gum and paid $1.75. Jake bought two chocolate bars and four packs of gum and paid $2.00. Find the cost of a chocolate bar and the cost of a pack of gum.
Let the price of the chocolate be:x
Let the price of the gum be:y
Then Sally's equation is:
3x+y=1.75
Jake's equation is:
2x+4y=2.00
Solve Sally's equation for y and substitute that into Jake's equation and solve for x:
3x+y=1.75
-3x+3x+y=1.75-3x
y=1.75-3x

Substitute that itnto Sally's equation for x and solve for y:

The chocolate cost x=$.50 and the gum cost y=$.25
Happy Calculating!!!

Sally bought three chocolate bars and a pack of gum and paid $1.75. Jake bought two chocolate bars and four packs of gum and paid $2.00. Find the cost of a chocolate bar and the cost of a pack of gum.
--------------
Let chocolate bar cost "c" and gum cost "g", then:
1st: 3c+g=175 cents
2nd: 2c+4g=200
Multiply 1st by 4 to get:
3rd: 12c+4g=700
Subtract 2nd from 3rd to get:
4th: 10c=500
c=50 cents (cost of chocolate bar)
Substitute into 2nd to solve for "g", as follows:
2(50)+4g=200
4g=100
g=25 cens (cost of gum)
