Question 544062: Please help me with the following word problem (I am pretty certain that it has to do with system of equations): A mechanic has 351 gallons of gasoline and 18 gallons of oil to make gas/oil mixtures. He wants one mixture to be 6% oil and the other mixture to be 2.5% oil. If he wants to use all of the gas and oil, how many gallons of gas and oil are in each of the resulting mixtures?
I have tried putting it into two equations .06x+.025y=18 and .94x+.975y=351 and then using the substitution method to solve for x and y. Yet my answers only become true for the first equation

I used a Matrix method on a TI-84 and got:
x = 250.71 gallons
y = 118.29 gallons
