A dehydrated patient needs 6.1% saline IV. Unfortunately the hospital only has bags of 5% and 7% saline solutions. How many liters of each of these solutions should be mixed together to yield 2 liters of the desired concentration?
------------------
Equation:
saline + saline = saline
0.05x + 0.07(2-x) = 0.061*2
---
Multiply thru by 1000 to get:
50x + 70*2 -70x = 61*2
------
-20x = -9*2
---
x = 0.9 liters (amt of 5% solution needed)
----
2-x = 2-0.9 = 1.1 liters (amt. of 7% solution needed)
