Suppose that you have a supply of a 10% solution of alcohol and a 90% solution of alcohol. How many quarts of each should be mixed to produce 80 quarts that is 35% alcohol?

Equation:
alcohol + alcohol = alcohol
---
0.10x + 0.90(80-x) = 0.35*80
-----
Multiply thru by 100 to get:
10x + 90*80 - 90x = 35*80
-70x = -55*80
x = (8/7)*55
x = 62.86 quarts (amt. of 10% solution needed)
---
80-x = 80-62.86 = 17.14 quarts (amt. of 90% solution needed)
