A saline solution is 20% salt. How many gallons of water must be added to dilute the mixture to 8 gals of a 15% saline solution.
...
let x=gal. of water to be added
8-x =gal. of 20% solution
..
20%(8-x)=15%(8)
1.6-.2x=1.2
.2x=.4
x=2
ans:
2 gallons of water must be added to dilute the mixture to 8 gals of a 15% saline solution.

Let represent the amount of water added to the original 20% solution to make it 8 gallons. Then the amount of 20% solution must be . Twenty percent of the 20% solution is salt. Fifteen percent of the 8 gallons at the end is salt, and since we added pure water, the salt at the beginning must be the same as the salt at the end.
